A wedding day is inherently spiritual, but we can be easily distracted by the details that don’t make the marriage what it is. For those who are looking for practical ways to make Christ the foundation of their wedding day, here are some practical ways to honor him throughout.

This has consistently been my favorite way I’ve watched couples give God the glory during their wedding day. It is always a powerful and emotional moment that so clearly reminds both the couple and their guests what the day is truly about.
Some print the lyrics of their favorite worship song on the programs for guests to join in song while others have their immediate families and wedding party alone praise alongside them. No matter the execution, it’s always something felt throughout every heart present.
Similar to the worship some incorporate, a moment for prayer while worship plays softly in the background is just as special of a moment.
I’ve attended weddings where every guest who is willing and able is invited to lay hands on the bride and groom and silently lift up a prayer. For those who want to keep it more intimate, make a note to immediate family and your wedding party that during the moment of prayer they alone are invited to surround you and your partner.

There are so many ways to be creative here. The unity ceremony leaves room for each couple to incorporate something that is meaningful to them personally- and it can all be biblically supported.
One of the most common displays is with the strand of three cords bride and groom will braid together referencing Ecclesiastes 4:12. I’ve also seen couples plant a tree together in a pot they’ve chosen and referenced Colossians 2:6-7 or Jeremiah 17:7-8.
At my own wedding, my husband and I took communion but also gave our guests the option to participate with us. Our moms passed baskets of pre-filled communion cups while our pastor invited those who felt comfortable and had an active faith in God to join alongside us.
My husband and I chose a bible with lined margins for our guests to write a note or a prayer and highlight a verse. It’s now in our home used a “family bible” we plan to continue to fill and use for bible study and teaching as our family grows in the future. These are my favorite highlighters we used that don’t bleed and have a variety of color options.
This is another area where you can be creative. What’s important to you and your partner? How do you incorporate your walk with Christ in your daily life? Another option I’ve seen is a prayer journal where guests are free to write a heartfelt prayer- something you can come back to in the future.

The last, but arguably most important way to give Him glory on your wedding day. It’s about more than the flowers, the food, and the dancing. It’s about the convenant being made. It’s an incredibly spiritual and supernatural moment inviting Him to join you to each other for the rest of your lives. This is the kind of thing that deserves deep thought, learning, and prayer in preparation.
One resource my husband and I used leading up to our wedding was Tying the Knot by Rob Green. Spend the time learning what your bible says marriage, love, and covenant is. Have conversations on what your roles will look like in your home and the way a marriage founded in Christ looks. Pray for wisdom. Pray for patience. Pray for blessing over your relationship.
The one thing that lasts beyond the wedding day is the covenant. Spend the time to learn what that truly means!
If having your wedding day documented with a Christian perspective is important to you, this is what my business is built on!
