What do you really need for your flatlay details?

What is a flatlay?

Flatlays are detail set ups that your photographer will often arrange the morning of your wedding, or even the day before or after if they have access to what they need. It's an aesthetic and concise way of displaying many of the details that will be a part of your wedding day. There are typically a few different setups- one for the bride's personal details, the groom's details, the stationary, and any other interesting and personal effects.

What should I bring for my flatlays?

To save yourself (and your photographer) some time and stress, assemble what you can in the few days before the wedding and put it in a box or bag that can be given to your photographer. Many of the details that will be photographed are items that will be on the bride or groom's person, so having them prepared before hand will give your photographer some time to capture them before they are needed.

For the bride's personal flatlays you should set aside items such as:

  • Your engagement ring (cleaned!)

  • Wedding band

  • Shoes (including reception shoes if they're important to you!)

  • Veil

  • Bouquet

  • Perfume

  • Necklace

  • Earrings

  • Hair accessories

  • Gloves (if you have them)

  • Lipstick

  • Vow book

The groom should plan to set aside:

  • His wedding band

  • Watch

  • Shoes

  • Cufflinks

  • Bow tie/Tie

  • Cologne

  • Sunglasses

  • Boutonniere

  • Flask

The stationary flatlays often include:

  • The save-the-date

  • Formal wedding day invitation

  • An envelope

  • Stamps

  • Wax seals

  • RSVP card

  • Details card

  • The bride and groom's escort card

  • Table menu

  • Ribbon

  • Charger plate

  • China plate

Any items outside of these lists that reflects the details of your day or your relationship can find its way into that flatlay bag or box for your photographer. There are no rules for flatlays! Many couples include personal items like embroidered hankerchiefs, personalized charms for the bouquet, cigars, a rosary, and other things that they may hold dear from departed family members who cannot be present on their wedding day. However- if there are items that you particularly want highlighted above the rest, make sure that is made known to your photographer so they know which things to prioritize.

What else do I need to know?

One of the biggest things I can ask is that you either notify your photographer of who your florist is- or you contact your florist at some point to ask them to set aside loose florals for your flatlay details. Sometimes florists will be on site arranging centerpieces or arch installations where loose stems can be pulled, but other times they are not present when and where your photographer is capturing those things. If you cannot find the time to contact your florist yourself, let your photographer know so they can send a message in advance!
